cats and dogs living together
Dogs and Cats – what’s their deal?

Just like the legendary myth that mice actually like cheese, do dogs really hate and want to kill, chase, etc cats?
Or… do they just feel a competition with them, or want to chase something similar in size to it?

I was wondering because they’ve got homes with cats and dogs living peacefully together – even movies and commercials show them as friends sometimes.

So what’s their deal? (biologically and socially)

The whole “dogs and cats can’t get along” idea is completely untrue. If they’re raised together or both have tolerant personalities, they get along fine. The reason why they don’t seem to like each other is because cats are solitary creatures and dogs are social.

Dogs are curious, especially about other animals. Usually, if they spy another animal that’s smaller than them and isn’t a dog, they’ll want to chase it, thinking it’s prey.

Cats want to be left alone, for the most part. They barely tolerate humans as it is, unless they’re feeding them or petting them (even then, they scratch when they’re done). The last thing they want is a curious dog sniffing them and barking at them.
